AAUW (American Association of University Women) empowers women and girls through advocacy, education, philanthropy, and research. Our nonpartisan, nonprofit organization has more than 170,000 members and supporters across the United States, as well as 1,000 local branches and 700 college and university partners. Since AAUW’s founding in 1881, our members have examined and taken positions on the fundamental issues of the day — educational, social, economic, and political.
Falls Church is a small town in Virginia and the Falls Church Area branch of AAUW is small, too, but we are very effective in supporting the AAUW mission. We consistently rank high in the state of Virginia for fund raising for scholarships and fellowships. We expanded our funding to support small project grants and scholarships for deserving local students whose backgrounds did not make the usual scholarship route a fruitful one.
But we don’t take ourselves too seriously! We enjoy hearing speakers on a variety of topics, going to movies, discussing books, meeting with neighbor AAUW branches, and socializing at our holiday party.
Several members have expanded our commitment to the Lobby Corps. Maybe that new direction will be yours.
Our Branch Member Book, in which each member describes herself in terms of her “loves” and tells why she belongs to AAUW, reflects our diversity and our optimism. We suggest you read it when you come to a meeting. Guests are always welcome.
